WELCOME TO VIRTUAL Y2

with Mrs Roberts

Welcome boys and girls to our new Y2 virtual classroom!

I hope everyone is well and keeping themselves healthy and of course busy. Over the next few weeks, whilst we are not at school, I will be uploading lots of different home learning jobs for you to complete with your parents and carers. I will include a variety of subjects so that you don't too get bored!

Home Learning Packs

Teachers have been working hard again this last week to prepare round 2 of our learning resource pack to help support parents and children with home learning. We have had a fantastic response and these packs will be ready to collect on Friday (29th May). If you have provided school with your email address look out for emails from our class email address year2nr@grangetown.sunderland.sch.ukIf you have any questions regarding school work please don't hesitate to contact us on this address.

Story Time

One of the things teacher's love to do is read to their class.  So that we don't miss out on that quality time together we will be reading a story each day for bedtime or anytime you feel like listening!

Phonics Play

Phonics play is usually a subscription site, but is currently free to use. It is a site packed with phonics games and resources you can use at home. The children know most of the games and love playing them in school.

Top Marks Maths Games

Top Marks Maths has lots of free maths games that are a great way to practice their maths skills and even to learn some skills that they might not be as confident with.The children in Y2 use this site regularly in their lessons, particularly when practising their times tables and number bonds on “Hit The Button”.

ICT Games 

ICT Games has a variety of Maths and English games to access completely free in a fun and interactive way.  Give them a go, you won't be disappointed!

Let's Get Physical!

We also recommend that children (and adults) get as much physical exercise as possible each day.

PE with Joe

Mrs Dolan has loved doing PE sessions with her children led by the Body Coach - Joe Wicks. Why don't you try!

 

Jump Start Jonny

Jump Start Jonny is also another site we use regularly in school. There is lots of free content on the site at the moment ranging from high energy work outs to chilled mindfulness sessions.

Cosmic Kids Yoga

Cosmic kids yoga is a fantastic way to stretch and unwind at the end of each day. Jamie the instructor tells you a story whilst you act this out through different yoga poses. The children love this and it is a firm favourite across school during our annual Health Week.

Week 8 - 19.6.20

Topic

You may think you now know almost everything there is to know about Florence Nightingale, but just in case, why not watch this video? It explains all about Florence's life and how she changed nursing and hospital for the better, all told by herself!

There are also some other stories about famous people from the past, some who made amazing discoveries, some who changed history by changing the way people thought, and all of them heros! If there is anyone you find particularly interesting, why not write a short paragraph or create a fact file about them.   

 

Maths

In maths you are still studying measurement, but this time it is about capacity! Capacity means the amount of something that a container can hold. You will have to read a measuring jug, make comparisons between how much a container could hold and see if you can work out how large the capacity is of items around your house.

If you are struggling with capacity, or think you need a little bit more help before completing the activities, this bitesize video will help you secure your knowledge!

Week 7 - 22.6.20

Topic

Your final learning pack is all about Florence Nightingale, you may have heard of her! She was a very famous nurse, who worked hard during the Crimean War to make hospitals a more hygenic and safer place.

There is already lots of information about Florence Nightingale in your learning pack, but if you would like to find out more, click on some of the websites below:

The activities in your pack include creating a timeline of Florence's life. Why don't you try and create a timeline of your own life, including many important events such as:
  -  What date you were born
  -  The date any of your siblings were born
  -  The date you started school
  -  The date you got a pet
Ask an adult to help you with this if you can't remember! You could use this website to make it.

 

Maths

In maths you will be learning about mass and whether objects are heavier or lighter than each other. To practice your knowledge, why not try measuring things around your house? You may have a set of scales to use, but if not just hold the two items in your hands with your arms outstretched and you will be able to tell which is heavier and which is lighter! When you think you have got it, click the picture below to try out your knowledge in a game!

                                  

 

Week 6 - 15.6.20

Topic

The topic section in your learning pack this week is based on natural art. We would like you to use your creativity and imagine how a flower could be turned into something entirely different. For example, look at the picture below where someone has used a rose as a tutu for a ballet dancer! Why don't you have a look around your garden or local area and see if there are any flowers you could turn into new things.

                                                     

Here are some other natural inspired arty ideas you could do from home:
    -  Arrange rocks to make a shape or face
    -  Make some rubbings of a leaf of tree bark
    -  Draw around a giant leaf and decorate it
    -  Dip leaves and flowers in paint or ink and use it to make some prints
    -  Press leaves, flowers and sticks into clay or playdough to make fossils
    -  Gather together some natural items and create a woodland creature with them

       

Maths

In maths we are revising our knowledge of place value. Remember, if you need a little help with remembering how to use your greater than and less than symbols, you can watch this numberblocks video to help you.

After practicing your tens and ones on the worksheet, why not put your knowledge to the test by trying out one of the games below!

Symmetry

If you have access to paints why don't you have a go at symmetry printing. Click on the image below to watch a video of how to do this. You could like this to our woodland theme by printing a flower or woodland animal.

The Woodlands

As part of your English jobs included in the pack this week you will need to listen to the story of Percy the Park Keeper written by Nick Butterworth. This series of stories was one of my favourites when I was growing up. Click the book cover below to listen to Nick read One Springy Day.

RSPB Bird Feeder

Make a bird feeder from the bottles you would normally throw away.

You will need:

  • Plastic drinks bottles
  • Yoghurt pots or milk cartons (make sure they're clean)
  • Wire or string
  • Bird seed
  • Scissors

Life Cycles

In science this week you are continuing to look at life cycles. This week you will be looking at life cycles of humans and animals. Why don't you have a go at being creative and make the life cycle of a butterfly more attractive?

This is made with a paper plate and other craft materials.

If you want to learn about a different life cycle, what about a frog? There are more stages to a frog's life cycle than a butterfly. Click here to watch a video of how a frog develops from an egg to an adult frog.

Week 1- 4.5.20

 

This week in your learning packs your science activities are based around plants and springtime. Here are some extra fun activities that you can do. Don't forget to upload them to Seesaw so I can see your wonderful work!

Sunflower Craft

Have a go at making your own sunflower using a fan technique. Click the link below to see what you will need and watch the video tutorial that shows you how to make them step by step.

Vincent Van Gogh

If you would like to try your hand at painting then a very famous artist called Vincent Van Gogh painted a picture called sunflowers. This painting is recognised all over the world. You could try and re-create it in Van Gogh's style.

Data Collection

In your maths pack this week you are learning all about different ways of collecting data and how we show this on different types of graphs. Have a go at making your own tally chart by looking at the plants or insects you can see in your garden or on your daily walk. 

Here's one I created using my tally chart from my daily walk. If you want to create an online one click here or you could make your own and colour it in using your pack of coloured pencils.

Suggested Weekly Learning Jobs

WC 27.4.20

English

One of my favourite authors for pictures books is Oliver Jeffers. He writes and illustrates his own books. Click on the picture of the story 'How to Catch a Star' to listen to it. Then have a go at some of the activities below.

 

  • Conscience Alley- Write down reasons why the star should come down and see the boy and reasons why he should not.  Use the conjunction because in your sentence to give reasons. eg I think the star should come down to play because the little boy is lonely.
  • Letter- Write a letter to the star to persuade him to come and play. Use some of your sentences from the previous task. Say why you want him to come down and what will you do together if he does?
  • Letter- Write a letter in the role of the star back to the little boy. You can decide if he is going to visit or stay where he is.

Creative

Create your own star collage

Using some cardboard (your recycling is a good place to find this) cut our a star shape. Don't worry if it's not perfect Oliver Jeffers stars weren't. Use left over materials or other recycling bits to decorate your star.

Maths

Following on from last week when we were measuring length, this week in maths we will be looking at comparing and ordering length. Click the link below for the teaching video and resources. Remember if you cannot print them out just write the answers down on a piece of paper.

Hello boys and girls! I hope you have had a nice Easter with your family. I will be updating our page with activities for you to complete at home across the week. In maths we will be following what we would be learning if we were in school. In English we will have a theme based around a story or topic where you can complete activities in reading, writing, spelling and handwriting. There will also be other activities related to the foundation subjects. Happy home learning! Mrs Roberts :-)

English

This week in English we will be looking at the story 'Ronald the Rhino' It is all about a Javen Rhino who is not happy with the way he looks. Below is the story if you want to read it by yourself and also a video of me reading it if you just want to listen.

Below are some activities based around the story. You could try to complete one each day or some might take you longer depending on how creative you get!

Reading- Re-read the story using the pages below. Have a go at answering the questions. There are 3 different star levels. I would be very pleased if you could answer the 3 star level! Remember you can underline anything you feel is important or want to copy for an answer. Try and complete independently if you can. If you cannot print these out then write your answers on a piece of paper and ask your adult to mark them when you are done.

Writing a character description- Using what you know about Ronald and the other characters from the story can you choose one to write a character description about? I have included a checklist below so that you can included all the features expected in Y2. 

Character Description- Steps to Success

- Y2 handwriting style with some letters joined

- All sentences make sense

- CL . ? ! used

- Conjunctions to extend your sentences (and, but, because, when, so, if, that)

- Adventurous adjectives to describe

- Use different sentence openers

- Write about appearance, likes, dislikes and personality

Writing Riddles- Can you have a go at writing a riddle to describe an animal it could be one from the story or another one of your favourite animals. When writing a riddle follow these rules:

1. Don't say the name of the animal

2. Start with harder clues and then get easier 

3. Describe their appearance and likes

4. End with 'What am I?

You can then read them to your family and see if they can guess your animal. Can you guess the animal from my riddle?

Maths

Whilst still at school the children were learning all about fractions of numbers and shape. We focused mainly on finding halves (1/2) and quarters (1/4) . Some suggested activities for this week is to investigate the fraction (1/3) and to understand that one half (1/2) is the same as two quarters (2/4). 

Remember a fraction has to have equal parts!

The following activities can be completed after reading any book, perhaps use one of the stories we have read online (click on the links above).

The activities are listed in order of increasing difficulty.  We have also included some prompts to support you in carrying out the activities.


Create an art piece based on one of the settings.

 - You could create a pencil sketch or use coloured pencils, felt tips, paint.  Be as adventurous as you want!

 - Extend this activity by labelling the setting using interesting adjectives and similes

Write a book review 

 - Remember to include a summary of the plot, your opinion and a star rating

 - Extend this activity by adding a recommendation – who would enjoy this book?

 - Create a fact file about your favourite character 

 - Write a letter to the author to tell them what you thought of the book 

 -  Design a poster to advertise the book 

 -  Rewrite the ending of the story to make it different.  This is your chance to change the book –

    think about how you could make it even better?

As you will remember one of the last activities we did at school as a whole class was visit Beamish.  We didn't get the chance to share the pictures together so I have added them here for you to look at.  A suggested activity this week is to look through the photos and talk to a grown up about our day.  You could then write a recount of our visit. 

Remember to start your recount by writing a short introduction answering the questions, when did we go? who went? why did we visit?

Then write about each part of our day using sentence starters such as First, After that, Next, Finally.  A recount must be tell me about your day in the order that they happened so think carefully about what we did and when!  An example text can be found here 

Bonus Points: If you can include an conjunctions in your sentences such as; and, but, because, so that would be amazing.  If you need to remind yourself about the conjunctions we have looked at click here!

 

Topic

In the last few weeks in our topic lesson we were practising making comics using the app Comic Life on our Ipads. We learnt how to change the background and add text and pictures, as well as the importance of using speech and thought bubbles in a comic. Feel free to keep practising this, as we would love to see what stories you come up with and how your technique has improved over these weeks. You could bring them in to show us when we come back to school! You can either download the comic life app if you have an Ipad, or there are similar online websites you could use such as Make Beliefs Comix.

In the next few weeks we would have been learning about the Easter story, including what the story tells us about Jesus, and how Christians celebrate Easter. Why not check out this video of the Easter story to find out about what happened. Or, you could read this story to find out a few more details (you might need an adult to read it to you). I have also included a glossary to help you understand what some of the words mean.
