Thursday Update - Oreo Moon Phases

As shape is our maths focus for this week, I found this extra game for you to play.

SpaceX Launch

Before we read our story of the week, there was an actual space shuttle launch at the weekend! If you skip through the video, you will be able to watch and countdown as SpaceX launches into space! If you skip through to about 22 minutes into the video that is when the shuttle launches. Click here to watch the footage.


Mrs Mitchell reads Whatever Next

  • I love reading this story - where does Baby Bear want to go?
  • How did he get there?What was it like up there?
  • Would you like to visit? 
  • When reading the story, discuss whether it is day or night - how do you know? What can you see in the sky and on the moon?
  • Look at what Baby bear used from his house for his rocket and what he put on to get to space. Compare to the space shuttle seen in the launch video below and in the book Making a space shuttle. Compare what he wears to the astronaut suit video below too.

 Story props and retelling the story

  • You could also grab your own story props to retell the story, using a colander, wellies, teddy, biscuits and a drink.
  • Also, use the Whatever Next picture cards, looking at the pictures with your grown up. Can you sequence the pictures in the correct order? You could make your own little mini book with the pictures too.


Moon Packing

What would you take to the moon? Or, think about what items Baby Bear took – would you like to pack anything else for him? Draw what you want or what you want Baby Bear to take on a piece of paper.


In a Rocket song

Join in with this song, linked to whatever next, all about Baby Bear. This will help you know the story and what happens in each part.


Biscuit Making and Decorating

Why not decorate some biscuits, using icing or chocolate for baby bear to take to the moon in his picnic. Or, you could make your own biscuits too. This supports maths too as you can count a given number of decorations and if you are making the biscuits, you can weigh the ingredients. Discuss the changes in the dough and smell the spices. We made gingerbread men using this recipe and some smarties:

Wow - I never knew about the different parts of a space shuttle! Can you remember them?


Moon Non-Fiction e-book

Read along with the story by clicking here. Discuss any new words or difficult words – a lot of these are highlighted yellow and you can click them to find out more about each word. How long does it take to get to the moon? What do astronauts wear? How many people have walked or jumped on the moon?


Mrs Mitchell reads Living in Space

Find out more about how the astronauts live in the space shuttles when they are in space. Look at the words that they are unsure of with Mrs Mitchell at the end and astronaut, space shuttle, moon, planets are all words to discuss too.


Mrs Mitchell reads Winnie in Space

Where does Winnie go? Does Winnie's cat Wilbur want to go on an adventure? Who do they meet? Why does Winnie need to make a new rocket? Look carefully at each page and see the planets in their order from closest to furthest away from the sun.

What's in the Night Sky video?

Click here to watch a video all about the night sky and what we can see – can you remember any of the names of the planets? What else can you see in the sky? 


Spacesuits come in all sorts of different shapes, sizes, designs and colours. Find out more about and see a pressure space suit being put on by clicking here.


2D shapes

  • 2D shape rocket game: Using the spinner and sheet, play with a grown up and spin the spinner with the astronaut on it. You have to colour the 2D shape that the astronaut points to on your rocket. The winner is the first person to colour in all of their rocket.
  • Can you go on a 2D shape hunt in your house, using the shape hunt sheet, colour in the shapes as you find them


Straw Rockets

Get a grown up to cut out the body and fins from the attached NASA template and instructions, or you could cut this out yourself. Then, follow the instructions, use some sellotape and grab the straw that’s included in your pack too. Place the finished rocket over your straw and blow it up in the air. How far will yours fly?


Space Scratch Art

Use felt tips or pencils to colour in the templates in your pack and then colour in over the top with a dark crayon. You could colour in with the crayon a couple of times. Then, use a sharp pencil, a ruler or a coin to rub the dark crayon away to make patterns and revealing the colour underneath.

Junk Model Rockets

Have a go at making your own, like the shuttle in the book we read above, or you could make your own junk model rocket using clean empty boxes, bottles and anything else you can find.


Moon Rocks

Why does the moon have dents on its surface? They’re called craters and were made when space rocks crashed into it. Try using things from home for your space rocks/meterorites. Make your own moon surface with some flour and find something to be your moon rocks to drop in. Hunt for some pebbles, use marbles, balls or kitchen foil rolled into a ball. Fill a tray with sand/flour. Drop your moon rocks onto the surface. Do different balls and marbles make different kinds of craters? Does it make a difference if you drop the balls or marbles from different heights?


Zoom, Zoom, Zoom Song

Practise counting backwards from 10 as you prepare to zoom to the moon with this song.
