We will also be writing a linear procedural text based on Neil Gaimen's  book Instructions. During our topic lessons, we will be learning all about the North America. We will learn the names of the North American countries and their capital cities and we will be comparing the climates and landscapes of these countries.

Through this book, we will be learning all about Odysseus's travels after conquering Troy. The children will write their own comic strip about The Cyclops and they will be writing in the style of Marcia Williams. In topic time, the children will be looking at what life was like during the Ancient Greek times and looking at their influences in today's culture. In Geography, the children will explore atlases to find out where in the world Greece is and which countries and seas surround modern day Greece. In art, the children will be testing their sculpting skills whilst making a Greek tile out of clay. They will also make a Greek vase using 'Scratch-art' technique. The children will then look at Greek patterns and have the chance to print their own patterns on to different materials.

November

Year 5 had a fabulous afternoon at the Trampoline Festival which was held at AAA Sports Centre in Southwick. The children had the amazing opportunity to use a wide range of facilities, including the trampolines, DMT and floor area. They were divided into three groups and explored the three different areas where they were coached by experienced gymnastic coaches. The children were all worn out by the end of the day!

Stadium of Light - Show Racism the Red Car workshops

Y5 have had a fabulous trip to the Stadium of Light whilst taking part in some ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ workshops. First of all, we learned about the different types of hate crime. Then, we learned about racism and why it is wrong. After that, we had a tour of the stadium. We got to look in the changing rooms, in the press room, the manager’s room and then we went out onto the actual stadium. We couldn’t believe how big it was (it seats 49,000 people in total). After a very informative morning, we sat in the Quinn’s bar and ate our lunch in style. To finish the day off nicely, we had a chat with Charlotte Potts, Gary Bennett, George Dobson and Alim Ozturk about their experiences with racism. Ultimately, the key message that we all clearly understood is that racism is not acceptable and will not be tolerated so can we all SHOW RACISM THE RED CARD!!!

Centre for Life

We had an 'Out of this World' time at the Centre for Life learning all about space. We started the day off in the planetarium looking at all of the different planets in our Solar System. After that, we had a fun ride on the 4D motion ride. One of the main highlights of the day was the Science Show, where the children watched lots of fun and exciting experiments. Later on, we had a chance to explore and investigate the Brain Zone and the Interactive Zone. All in all the children had a fabulous time and learned loads of new facts about space.

Parent workshop

Thank you to all the parent/carers who came to our workshop this morning. We all had a wonderful time making our origami stars.
