Information for Parents and Carers

* PE will be every Friday afternoon - Empire dancers will be rehearsing their dance with Miss Beetham and the children who aren't taking part in the Empire dance will be having cricket with Arg.

*SATs After School Buster will begin on Tuesday 14th January and will run every Tuesday, with the last session being on Tuesday 12th May.  There isn't any cost for the club and the children will receive a snack and a drink before each session.  Letters have been sent home.

* On a Tuesday lunchtime, the children can take part in a football session with Arg.

 

 

We are the Neverdead

 

Our topic for this half term is 'We are the Neverdead' and is based on the class novel 'The 1000 Year Old Boy by Ross Welford.  The story is about a boy who was born during the Anglo-Saxon times and takes a special life pearl, which makes him never age.  When he is 1000 years old, he meets two children in the modern world and the story focuses on the adventures they have together and the problems of being a 1000 year old boy.  The children will use the story as an inspiration for their own writing.  They will write their own version of the story, which moves backwards and forwards in time.  They will write a persuasive letter to encourage a person to use a life pearl.  In Music, the children will look at music through the decades and consider how the styles of music have changed. 

 

 

 

World Book Day

 The children took part in the annual World Book Day celebration in school.  The children were invited to dress as a character from a book.  The children dressed as many things including a giraffe, a suffragette and a character from the Enid Blyton books.  To begin the day, the children read picture books to some of the children from our Reception classes.  In class we then read the book 'One Plastic Bag' by Miranda Paul and it is about an actual  Gambian lady called Isatou Ceesay, who noticed the amount of plastic bags that were being thrown in the streets in her village.  she then had the idea of collecting them, cutting them into strips and crocheting them into bags and purses that she then sold.  The children made from card an exploding book from cardboard and using the story as inspiration wrote a retell of the story, a fact file about Gambia or a non-fiction text about the harmful affects of plastic.  At the end of the day, some of the children read a story - in French- to the children in their French lessons.  All of the children at the end of the day were given a £1 voucher, which they could use to buy a special World Day book or use it to get a pound discount from another book.

 

Monozukuri Caravan at Nissan

The children took part in the Monozukuri Caravan event at Nissan, where they had lots of new experiences.  The day began with a cookie and a glass of juice and then the children learned about the Nissan factory, how Nissan originated and learn about Japanese words that we use in our own language.  The children signed a Daruma doll, which is a symbol of good luck.  The next activity involved the children working in pairs and making a car out of Lego.  The children were then put into teams to be a production line, similar to a production line in the factory, where each person is responsible for making an aspect of the car.  The children had to work well together to build the cars in the fastest time possible and with as few errors as possible.  After lunch, the children visited the workshop, where they learned about how the cars are made, discovered more about the electric car - the Leaf - and saw a robot in action.  Following on from this, the children watched a film about cars are made and then tried their hands at activities to test their speed and co-ordination.  The activities included banging out dents in a sheet of metal and using an electric drill to put in and take out screws.  All of the children were given a goodie bag to end the day.  The children had a great day and learned lots of new facts and developed new skills. 

 

 

Jigsaw

The children this term are beginning a new PSCHE scheme called Jigsaw.  The children will be thinking and discussing issues including their personal choices, considering how other people live and making goals.  The children began by making a class charter, where the children have all agreed about behaviour and attitudes during whole class discussions.  The children have a toy called 'Jigsaw Jem' which they use when they wish to speak in the whole class.  We also have a cat called Jerrie Cat, which we use if we need to take a pause or break.  The children will also learn calming and thinking techniques.  

 

 

Judo 

The children took part in a Judo session to give them a taster of what the sport is like.  The session was led by a qualified instructor.  The children had to work in pairs and complete a range of activities.  The first one involved the children each holding one end of a band and one child had 10 seconds to try and take it from the other child.  The second activity involved both children sitting down, with one child having the band behind them.  The other child had to move to try and get it, with the other child blocking them.  The final activity, which was the children's favourite, involved them throwing their partner.  The children had a great session and enjoyed trying a new activity.  

 

 

 Our Natural World

 

 

This half term our topic is 'Our Natural World'.  In this topic, the children will be learning about how mountains and volcanoes are formed, where they are found and the impact they have on the places around them.  In Art, the children will be learning about the work of an artist called Rosalind Monks, who draws insects and animals and uses pattern to give detail to them.  The children will use her techniques to create their own piece of artwork.  In Science, the children will learn about how animals are adapted to the places they live, the work of Charles Darwin and evolution.  In DT, the children will design and make a bird feeder to feed the birds over winter. 

Cooking at Newcastle University

The children took part in cooking and modern languages event at Newcastle University called Linguacuisine.  The children worked with a volunteer to cook the Spanish tapas dish called datiles con queso, which is dates with cream cheese.  The children learned the names of all the ingredients, such as dates, cheese and almonds.  They also learned the names of the equipment they used such as plate, teaspoon and knife.  The children made the datiles con queso by cutting the date in half, filling with it cream cheese and sprinkling chopped almonds on the top.  The children then tasted what they had made - many of the children enjoyed but some were not so keen.  The children then used Ipads to research what tapas was, what the word taps means and found examples of tapas that children like.  They then worked in pairs to produce a poster about tapas.

 

 

Parent Workshop

 In December we had our autumn term workshop, which many parents and carers were able to attend.  As our topic was 'Our Natural World', we challenged the children along with their adults to make a bird feeder.  The children were given lolly sticks, glue, tape and pens.  The children were shown examples of bird feeders made from lolly sticks and then they had to  make their own.  We had a range of designs made: some had a platform with built up side: some had a roof either curved or pointy and one was even a cylindrical shape.  Once the glue had firmly dried, the children varnished their feeders to protect them from winter weather and string was attached. The children loved working alongside their parents and carers and we hope that the birds will enjoy using the feeders this winter.

 

 

 

 

Courage and Conflict

Our topic this half is 'Courage and Conflict' and is all about the Second World War.  The children will learn about the causes of the war and the countries involved.  They will learn about the Blitz, life as an evacuee and rationing.  The children will be reading 'Letters from the Lighthouse' all about evacuees in Devon.  They will use the information they learn about the war to inspire their writing, which will include letters and blogs.  They will design their own propaganda poster and make a model Anderson Shelter.  In music, they will learn WW2 songs and learn about Vera Lynn and the importance of the lyrics in her songs.  In French, they will learn words associated with  the war.  We are looking forward to having a great first half term in Year 6.

 

Waterstones Visit

The children of Year 6 had the opportunity to visit Waterstones book shop in The Bridges to help choose picks for the school library.  Miss Hunter, our English subject leader, secured a bursary of £500 for the children to spend on a range of fiction books.  The children walked into town and once at the bookshop they began to choose the books.  The children enjoyed looking at the covers and reading the blurbs on the back to find out what the books were about.  They were given support by a member of Waterstones staff.  The children choose a range of books for all ages.  Back at school, the books will be sorted and placed in the school library for children to enjoy. 

 

 

World War 2 Day

To celebrate the end of our topic 'Courage and Conflict', which was all about the Second World War, the children took part in a special day.  The children came to school dressed as evacuees and word the gasmask boxes and name labels, which they had made in school the previous day.  The day began with the children taking part in the whole school Harvest Assembly, where they sand the wartime songs 'Pick Up Your Troubles' and 'It's a Long Way to Tipperary'.  Back in class, the children made an identity card and a Union Jack flag to celebrate the end of the war.   They also made a paper model of a Spitfire plane.  On the afternoon, the children tasted some wartime recipes.  These included Spam; a carrot, cabbage and pickle sandwich filling; a dessert made from grated apple and condensed milk and jelly.  The children also learnt about the Mores Code and the code breaker Alan Turing and the Enigma machine.  They then cracked codes and wrote their own.  It was a fantastic way to end our topic, which all the children have really enjoyed.  We are all looking forward to the next topic.  

 

Holocaust Memorial Workshop

The children worked with a local blacksmith, called Darren, to produce a candle holder which is going to be part of a larger display to remember Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday 27th January 2020. The final piece is going to be displayed in London.  They were given a round disc, which had been heated up to high temperature in the forge and then the children used a large hammer to stamp in a 3-digit number.  The disc was then placed back in the forge to be reheated and the children used a special tool to turn the disc into a bowl to hold a candle.  The children really enjoyed the experience and enjoyed dressing up in the special protective clothing.

Bring It On at the Beacon of Light

Some of the Year 6 children went to a special event at the Beacon of Light called 'Bring it On', where the children took part in a range of exciting activities.  The aim of the day was to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects in school and as careers when the children are older.  There were many different areas for the children to explore such as construction, renewable energy and pharmaceutical.  The children had the chance to move a heavy weight with a digger from Komatsu UK - they all thought this was great fun.  They learned about the construction industry and made models from straws and construction equipment.  They had the chance to make circuits and test their dexterity skills on a range of activities.  The children had a fantastic day and enjoyed meeting a range of different people and trying a wide range of fun and exciting activities.

 

 Eden Camp

The children visited Eden Camp as part of the topic 'Courage and Conflict', where they have been learning all about the Second World War.  Eden Camp is a former World War 2 prisoner of war camp.  Each of the huts where prisoners would have been held has been turned into a exhibit about an area of the war.  After a two hour journey, the children began the visit be exploring replicas of planes and tanks that were used in the war.  the children then went to watch a puppet show, which was all about the music of the 1940s and featured puppets of Dame Vera Lynn and George Formby.   After lunch, the children then explored the huts, which brought to life for them the sights, smells and feelings of the war.  One of the children's favourite huts was the one all about the Blitz.  The children were able to experience what it was like when a house was bombed and how dark it was during the blackout.  The children also enjoyed seeing a wartime street and being in a German U-boat.  The children ended the day by playing on the play area and buying a souvenir of their day.  

 

 

Refugee and Asylum Workshop

The children had a workshop with Friends of the Drop-In, which is an organisation in Sunderland that works with and supports asylum seekers and refugees.  The session began with the children thinking about any major changes that they have had in their own life and the feelings associated with this.  The children were then given words such as refugee, migrant and asylum seeker and they had to match these to the correct definition, and learned about what these were.  The children also heard from a lady from Honduras, called Claudia, and they learned about the reasons she had to leave her country and how the move has changed her life. The children were give the opportunity to ask her questions.  The  children were then given questions to answer about why people may leave a country and to consider the emotions associated with this.  They discussed how it can be for both good and bad reasons.  The children had an enjoyable session and learned a great deal.

 

 

 

Travelling Tuba

The Travelling Tuba group came into school to work with the children on a range of music activities.  The children first took part in a whole school assembly, where they heard tuba and piano music.  They were given a History lesson about instruments similar to the tuba and found out which countries they came from.  On the afternoon, the children took part in a special workshop where they used a range of instruments to play Brazilian salsa music.  The children played instruments including the triangle and the maracas.  They had to play a range of different beats and even dance while they were playing the  beat.  The children had a great time and love playing the instruments.
