Year 5s trip to the Hartlepool Maritime Experience was to be the
launch of a very special creative adventure.
Following the visit the
children began their work with Carina Rodney, a local playwright.
Over the following weeks the children skilfully developed pirate
themed stories and poems. They learnt how to effectively describe
pirate characters, how they got their scars, their dastardly deeds
and created their own pirate ‘Codes of Conduct’.
They found out the
secrets, dreams and fears of their pirates and sent these pirates on
a series of adventures. The children certainly have brilliant
imaginations!
To end our seafaring adventure and to give parents the
opportunity to share in their children’s learning we held a ‘Special
Celebration Afternoon’. Parents were invited, a buffet was provided
and two local actors were commissioned to read and perform the
children’s work. The children decided they would also like to
perform, so they wrote some amazing sea poems to read out loud.
The
afternoon was an absolute delight, a fantastic, incredibly unique
experience for the children and their families.
Here are some of
the children’s responses: Martina, “I felt really good sharing my
story and poem with such a large group, because I don’t often get to
do it.” Michael, “It was unusual but fun and exciting. The
actors had really piratey voices!” Dalton,“I felt really
proud, my dad thought my story was brilliant! He liked my silly
names.” |
