Year three visited Bede’s World as part of our Viking topic; we
wanted to find out how the monks lived before the Vikings attacked
them.
When we arrived we met our guide, she showed us a model of how
the monastery looked in Bede’s time, which was over 1300 years ago.
We talked about the life of monks and the work they did. Then we
looked around the museum and drew pictures of monks working.
We left
the museum and walked over to a very old church built around the
time of 685 AD, called St Paul’s. Inside the church our guide gave
us monks’ habits to put on, which had cowls to cover our heads. The
monk’s habits were very warm and itchy! We had to walk slowly up the
aisle and sit on the altar steps. Then our guide showed us the
oldest stained glass in Europe which is very beautiful!
