Chinese New Year at GPS

CNY

We recently celebrated Chinese New Year, across the school. Articles and photos from all classes will be online soon. Meanwhile, here’s a report from Year 2:

To help us understand how Chinese people celebrate the New Year we discussed and compared how we celebrate a New Year. We agreed that we both have fireworks and parties. We also wish each other a “Happy New Year”.

We then looked at the Chinese Zodiac and the children learnt that each year is named after a different animal. In Year 2 you are either a rabbit or a tiger.

Chinese people believe in good luck charms and because this year is the year of the dog we decided to create or own hanging charms. The children chose which breed of dog they would like to use. They then coloured these in and wrote ‘Happy New Year’ in Chinese lettering. Using ribbon we attached them together and then hung them up. We listened to traditional Chinese music as we worked.

The children also enjoyed looking at Chinese decorations and dressing up. We all had a fantastic day!
