Welcome to Miss Stell's Class

On this page you will be able to find pictures and information informing you of all of the exciting activities which we have been up to in class.

A few reminders:

  • PE will be on a Tuesday afternoon. Please ensure that children have a full PE kit in school on this day and that earrings have been removed.
  • Each child has been given a reading book and blue home school diary. We ask that these are in school every day so that we can read with the children and change their book. We recommend that the children read at home for 10-15 minutes at least three times a week.
  • The children will receive homework on a Friday which must be returned by the following Thursday. The homework will always link to what the children have been learning that week.
  • On Tuesdays and Thursdays the children can bring in 10p to buy a slice of toast at playtime.
  • On Fridays the children can buy healthy snacks at playtime. We ask that they bring in no more than 50p per week. The children each have a tub where they can store their money in school if they have any left over for the following week.

Our Fantastic Work!

Over the last 6 weeks we have been learning the features of a non-chronological report. All of the children have worked extremely hard and have created a fantastic piece of work.

Brilliant Birdfeeders! - 23.3.18

Whilst at the Wetland Centre we purchased a birdfeeder at the gift shop. Today we have filled it with peanuts and hung it outside of our classroom window. We can't wait to see how many birds it attracts.

Washington Wetland Centre - 15.3.18

The children had a fantastic day visiting The Wetland Centre in Washington. The weather wasn’t on our side, however we still managed to keep a smile on our faces all day and we had a fantastic time. First we went on a minibeast hunt and sorted them into ones with legs and ones without legs. We had to look very closely under rocks to see if we could see any. We then had a walk around the centre and were amazed to see ducks which had blue beaks! Once back in the warm, we explored a map of the word and discussed where different animals live. We were so lucky to be able to explore different artefacts such as a swans wings and a turtles shell. Before heading back to school we bought a cuddly hedgehog as a class pet (which we later named happy) and a birdfeeder from the gift shop. As always, Miss Stell was so impressed by our fantastic behaviour.

World Book Day - 9.3.18

The children have had a fantastic day sharing stories with each other. As a class we read 'We're Going On a Bear Hunt' and sequenced the story. We then completed a book review. The children all looked fantastic in their costumes.

Backhouse Park Clean Up - 8.3.18

We have had a fantastic afternoon cleaning up Backhouse Park. We worked in small groups to pick up the litter using litter pickers and gloves and put it in black bags. we talked about the importance of making sure that all of our rubbish goes into the bin and that we recycle whenever we can.

Baltic Bridges Visit

On Friday 9th February we visited The Baltic in Gateshead. We had a fantastic time drawing and creating our own bridges. We used binoculars to explore the landmarks across the River Tyne. After lunch, we walked across The Millennium Bridge to Newcastle. A fantastic day was had by all and the children were fantastic role models for GPS.

Bright Lights, Big City!

Our topic this half term is Bight Lights, Big City. We will be learning all about London, its history and its landmarks. We are going to be reading 'Katie in London' and looking at the landmarks which she sees during her visit. We are also going to learn about The Great Fire of London.

Shredded Wheat Wreaths

Today in year 1 (13.12.17) we have been making small wreaths to hang on our Christmas trees. To make them we mixed shredded wheat with green paint and glue and moulded it into the shape of a wreath. We used small pieces of red card to add some berries and red ribbon to hang them off the tree.

Winter Fun

Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed playing in the snow! The children used some lovely vocabulary to describe it such as fluffy, crunchy and soft. To warm up, we enjoyed a hot chocolate with marshmallows on the top.

The Jolly Postman

The children have really enjoyed our topic this half term. We have been reading 'The Jolly Postman' and learning about all of the characters which he visits. We have read lots of traditional tales such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Jack and the Beanstalk and Cinderella.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears - The children had a lot of fun reading, retelling and acting out this story. One of our favourite activities was when we made porridge. We tasted it and thought of lots of words to describe it. We could definitely see why Goldilocks ate it all up!

Jack and the Beanstalk - For this part of our topic we decided to plant our own beans and see if we could get them as big as the one which Jack climbed. We talked about what we would need to do to help our beans grow. We decided that they would need soil, water and sunlight to grow. We have watered them each day and taken good care of them.

Cinderella - The children were very excited to go to Whitley Bay Playhouse to see Cinderella in pantomime. We had so much fun and laughed all of the way through, even when those mischievous stepsisters sprayed us with water. We couldn't believe it when two of our children were given the opportunity to go onto the stage and meet Buttons! As always, the children were impeccably behaved and fantastic ambassadors for GPS.

An update on our topic

Something has landed!

The children have really enjoyed learning all about space. We have just finished reading our class story Beegu and the children have really enjoyed this. They have created some lovely pieces of writing from it and have really engaged with the text. Last week we were learning all about the moon and the children were amazed at some of the things which we found out. They really enjoyed making moon dough and moulding this.

A walk to Backhouse Park

 Backhouse Park

As part of our topic, we have been learning all about where we live. We went on a walk to backhouse park and discussed lots of features of our local area. The children really enjoyed this visit. Whilst we were there we noticed that some of the leaves were changing colour.

To Infinity and Beyond!

This half term our topic is all about space. We will be reading 'Beegu' and doing lots of fun activities including testing materials, making moon dough and investigating a spaceship crash. We will be comparing humans to aliens and writing a character description of an alien from our story. We will also be learning about Neil Armstrong and his mission to the moon.
