Year 2 African Day

To find out more about our ‘Sunderland to Safari’ topic, the Year 2 children took part in an exciting African day. This was a whole day all about Africa to help the children to learn more about this amazing place. This began with a treasure hunt, finding facts about the Maasai Tribe, who live in the African Savannah. We then had lots of fun creating our own traditional African jewellery. To end the day, the children took part in an African music workshop where they learnt how to play the djembe drums and used these to perform some traditional African music. Well done Year 2 on a fantastic day!

Sunderland to Safari

We have started this year with a brand new topic 'Sunderland to Safari.' Throughout this topic, we will be learning all about Africa and compare this part of the world to our hometown of Sunderland. The children have enjoyed learning about a range of animals that live in the African Savannah. They have created their own information leaflet all about an elephant and have also written about a lion hunting for its prey. To help us to learn about a range of African animals, we have been reading the story 'One Day on our Blue Planet.' The children have particularly enjoyed playing the parts of some of these animals.

Oliver Jeffers

This half term, the Year 2 children have thoroughly enjoyed learning all about the author ‘Oliver Jeffers.’ To start this topic, we read the story ‘The Way Back Home’ and the children wrote their own versions. We then read ‘How to Catch a Star’ and created our very own artwork taking inspiration from the books illustrations. We are now reading our third Oliver Jeffer’s book ‘Lost and Found’ and are enjoying creating story boards of this to prepare for writing our own endings. Excellent work Year 2!

Time Travellers

This half term our topic is Time Travellers. We have been having lots of fun learning about what life was like in this past. We have looked at old houses, clothes and jobs and we even used the iPads to create pictures of what we would look like in the past. We then used the App ‘Chatterpix’ to turn our images into videos to record our voices talking about what jobs we may have had in the olden days. In English, we have been reading Oliver Twist and the class have really enjoyed completing lots of drama activities around the story ready to write a diary entry in the role of Oliver himself.

Beamish

As part of our Time Traveller’s topic, Year 2 enjoyed a trip to Beamish. During this, the children were fully immersed in what life was like during the Victorian times. We walked around the town and got to go inside some of the old shops. The children particularly enjoyed visiting the sweet shop. We then went to the village and looked at a range of old Victorian houses and some children even got to sit on an old toilet! Lastly, we took a trip down an old mine and found out how dark it was down there. The children behaved excellently during the trip and were a credit to Grangetown. Well done Year 2!
