Roman fort trip

On Monday 10th July year 3 visited the Roman Fort and Museum in Wallsend. We were able to take part in a workshop in the morning where we were able to complete our very own army training. We had to learn the Roman Oath in order to join the army and become auxiliary soldiers. The children were able to practise holding the shields and spears properly. In the afternoon we were able to explore the museum, try on some Roman clothing and then visit the site where the Roman Fort once stood. Some of the children even stood in the Roman toilets! To finish our day we visited the tower where we were able to get a fantastic view of the whole site. We also engaged in a video showing us how the site had changed over the 2000 years since the Romans were there. We had a great day and the children represented the school fantastically!

Topic update - flower power

This term year 3 have continued our topic Flower Power which has had a strong link to the science curriculum. We have grown and looked after our own plants, whilst investigating what they need to grow and survive. The children have been making their own Flower Power picture using lines and circles to create the illusion of a flower, inspired by the work of Susie Weber. In maths we have focused on telling the time accurately to the minute, converting between the 12 and 24 hour clock and fractions. Within geography we have been looking at cities, mountains and rivers all located within the United Kingdom. We have practised using maps and charts to locate these. In literacy the children have been writing a five part story with a problem, linked to the story The Lonely Beast. They were all a huge success. Year 3 have worked extremely hard this half term.

Year 3 Music

This half term year 3 are looking at "Flower Power" music from the 1960's and studying songs by The Beatles. They will be listening to lots of songs discussing instruments, lyrics and overall effect. Year 3 will also be doing lots of singing and learn some songs from the 1960's including "All you need is love".

Flower power

This term the children's topic will be called Flower Power. We will be looking at the functions of a plant, the different parts and even trying to grow some of our own different flowers and foods. Through our maths lessons we will be focusing on telling the time and fractions. In music the children will be exploring songs of the 1960's and practicing performing some. Art lessons will see the children using a range of different materials to make some flower collages and pattern pictures. Year 3 will continue their Wednesday dance sessions with the help of some dance teachers from Sunderland University.

Visit to tesco

On Wednesday 15th February Year 3 visited Tesco to find out all about healthy eating. We worked in groups to find different fruits and vegetables on the shop floor. We discussed whether we had ever tasted them before. Nigel, the man who was working with us, told us the difference between a fruit and a vegetable. We then talked about how much sugar you find in lots of the foods and drinks we usually have as a snack. Nigel told us about some healthy swaps we could make. We tasted some of the healthy snacks – we didn’t all like them! Finally we worked as teams to make our own home made muesli. We added oats, sultanas and bran flakes. At the end of the morning, we were given a goodie back with lots of healthy treats, stickers and ideas about keeping healthy.

Roald dahl afternoon

On Wednesday 12th October the children welcomed a special visitor to the school. They were challenged to help a lady called Beatrice get a job in her local library by guessing different Roald Dahl books to unlock challenges and activities. The children correctly unlocked four challenges and created their own marvellous medicine, made a new giant, made an advert for a chocolate bar and helped to draw the missing parts of characters from Matilda. We had a really fun afternoon working together and trying different activities.

Welcome to Miss Fraser's Class

Welcome back to school, we hope you enjoyed your summer holidays. Our topic for this term is a Literacy topic based around "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". We will be using talk for writing to text map a story and then making changes. We will be doing drama and trying to persuade Mr Willy Wonka that he should make our chocolate in his factory. Within art and DT we will be creating our own chocolate bars and advertising them. In maths we will be moving onto 3 digit numbers and securing our knowledge of place value in order to learn written methods of addition and subtraction.
